Overview

I had an opportunity to job shadow registered nurse Jordan Nassan while administering medications, performing hydrotherapy, dressing changes and rehabilitation at UPMC Mercy. UPMC Mercy Burn Center is nationally recognized for severe burn injuries care and innovative treatments.

A day in the life of a nurse working in a burn center is inspiring. I learned how to care for patients healing from very traumatic experiences. One patient that stood out during my observation was a male who accidentally caught his pants on fire and ran into a lake. He suffered third degree burns on his lower body. After surgery, I was a part of his aftercare treatment routine.  Nurses like Jordan and the rest of the team provide exceptional care to help these patients heal mentally and physically.
